The Best YouTube Download APIs in 2026, Compared
The main ways to download YouTube videos and MP3s programmatically, compared on what you get back, quality, MP3, pricing, error codes, published success rates, dubbed audio and webhooks. Every fact is from the provider's own site, checked October 20, 2026.
Vid Kraken · Updated October 19, 2026
YouTube has no official API for downloading videos. The YouTube Data API gives you metadata, not files (here's why). So every "YouTube download API" is a third party running something like yt-dlp behind proxies, and they differ a lot in what they hand back, what they charge, and how often they work.
We compared the options developers reach for first: a managed API, a large scraping platform, the big API marketplaces, a budget per-request API, and the open-source tools. We run one of them, Vid Kraken, so treat our ranking with that in mind. To keep it checkable, every fact below comes from the provider's own website, docs or API, checked on October 20, 2026. Prices and features change, so check the provider's own page before you commit.
Short version:
- Production app where downloads must keep working: Vid Kraken. It publishes its success rate live, 99.993% over the last 30 days across more than 2.5 million downloads, and returns a machine-readable error code for every failure.
- Already on Oxylabs, or need files pushed into your own bucket: Oxylabs Web API.
- Already running scrapers on Apify: an Apify downloader Actor.
- Just experimenting, or a personal project: yt-dlp on your own machine.
What actually matters in production
Most of these APIs work in a demo. The differences show up after a few thousand downloads:
- What you get back. A file hosted on the provider's storage or CDN works from any server. A raw YouTube
googlevideo.comURL is tied to the IP that requested it and expires, so fetching it from another server often fails with 403 Forbidden. - Proof of reliability. YouTube changes its bot checks constantly, and every downloader breaks sometimes. A provider that publishes success rates, measured per video, can show you how often and for how long.
- Error codes. "Video unavailable" can mean deleted, private, age-restricted or region-locked. Your users need to know which one. Machine-readable codes let your app say so (see our error codes guide).
- What failures cost. Some providers charge for failed jobs. Some bill a minimum per file.
- Caps. File size, duration and resolution limits decide whether long videos work at all.
- Scale. Webhooks, concurrency limits and bulk support matter once you process thousands of videos.

A note on run-based success rates like Apify's: a run counts as succeeded even when some videos inside it failed or returned links that don't work. In our own tests, about 15% of Apify runs marked succeeded returned a link that timed out or failed. More detail in Vid Kraken vs Apify.
Each option in brief
Vid Kraken
A managed YouTube download API. You POST a URL and a format (1080, 720, 480, 360, audio-mp3, audio-aac or audio), and get back a link to the finished file on its CDN. 4K is available on request (email). You can trim with startTime and endTime, list and pick dubbed audio languages, and get a webhook when each job finishes.
- Pick it when downloads are a feature in your product, you need users to see a real reason when a video fails, and you want costs that only move with gigabytes delivered.
- Limits: no transcripts or comments, and it's job-based, so you poll or use a webhook rather than getting the file in one call. One URL per request, up to 100 in flight per account.
Oxylabs Web API
Oxylabs is one of the largest proxy and scraping companies, and its Web API has a YouTube download endpoint alongside YouTube metadata, subtitles and search. You send a video ID, and the file lands in your own cloud bucket. It goes up to 8K, can return audio only or video only, and can cut a clip with start_at and end_at.
- Pick it when you already buy proxies or scraping from Oxylabs, or you need files, up to 8K, delivered straight into your bucket.
- Watch out for: there's no hosted link, so you need your own S3, GCS or S3-compatible bucket. Audio language is limited to the default or original track, so you can't pick a specific dub. Some failures don't fail the job: its docs say an age-restricted video returns
state: "done"with no file and the reason in a status code. At $1 to $2 per GB it costs several times more per gigabyte than Vid Kraken, and it publishes no success rate.
Apify Actors
A marketplace of downloader Actors, each built and priced by a different developer. It's a good fit if you already run other scrapers on Apify. The most-used Actor completed 94.8% of its runs in the last 30 days, and Actors get deprecated when their developer moves on. See our full Apify comparison.
RapidAPI listings
The quickest way to prototype. Reliability varies by listing and isn't published. A common complaint is a provider that worked in a demo and broke within weeks. The most-subscribed listing's own docs say its links depend on the end user's country, and that leaving the country parameter out "may lead to 403".
video-download-api.com
Cheap per request on paper, but hard to build on. Requests go to a separate host and carry your API key in the URL query string. You poll a progress endpoint until it reads 1000, then check whether success is 1 or true. Its own docs list conflicting endpoints and give no error codes, rate limits or link lifetime. It's prepaid, and jobs are charged when accepted, so failed downloads still cost you.
Cobalt
Open-source and free to self-host. Its terms say the public instance is not meant to be used in other projects without permission, and that instance doesn't currently list YouTube among its supported services. A self-hosted copy brings back the same bot-detection maintenance as running yt-dlp yourself.
yt-dlp
The open-source tool most of these services run on. It's free and the most flexible, and on your own laptop it works well. In production you own the hard parts: bot checks, proxies, cookies, the JavaScript runtime YouTube now requires, and frequent updates. See the best yt-dlp alternatives if you're moving off it.
How to choose
- Your users will notice failures: pick a provider that publishes per-video success rates and returns error codes. Ask any other provider for numbers before you commit.
- You need 4K: Vid Kraken (on request), Oxylabs, an Apify Actor, or a self-hosted Cobalt or yt-dlp.
- You need audio for transcription or ML: prefer the original stream, with no re-encoding, over MP3. Vid Kraken's
audioformat does this. - You need dubbed languages: Vid Kraken, Cobalt or yt-dlp. Oxylabs only offers the default or original track.
- You're processing thousands of videos: you'll want webhooks, failures that aren't charged, and links that work from any server.

What is the best YouTube download API in 2026?+
It depends on what you need. For production apps where reliability matters, Vid Kraken publishes a live success rate (99.993% over the last 30 days across more than 2.5 million downloads), returns direct CDN links and machine-readable error codes, and bills only for bandwidth. Oxylabs suits teams already on its platform who want files delivered into their own bucket. yt-dlp is free if you can maintain it yourself.
Is there an official YouTube API for downloading videos?+
No. The YouTube Data API returns metadata such as titles, durations and channel information, but it has no endpoint for downloading video or audio files. Every YouTube download API is a third-party service.
Which YouTube download APIs publish their reliability?+
Vid Kraken publishes daily success rates for the last 7, 30 and 90 days at vidkraken.com/reliability, counted per video. Apify shows run-level stats for each Actor, which count a run as succeeded even when some of its videos failed. Oxylabs, video-download-api.com, RapidAPI listings, Cobalt and yt-dlp publish no success rates.
Which YouTube download APIs return a direct download link?+
Vid Kraken returns a link to the finished file on its CDN. Oxylabs and Apify put the file in your own bucket (Apify can also keep it in its storage for about 3 days). Cobalt streams through its server on a link that expires after 90 seconds by default. Be careful with APIs that return raw googlevideo.com URLs: those are tied to the requesting IP and often fail with 403 from another server.
Which YouTube download APIs support dubbed or multi-language audio?+
Vid Kraken (language parameter), Cobalt (youtubeDubLang) and yt-dlp (language format selectors) let you pick a specific dub. The most-subscribed RapidAPI listing has a lang parameter. Oxylabs only offers the default or original track.
What's the cheapest YouTube download API?+
Self-hosted yt-dlp or Cobalt is free apart from servers, proxies and maintenance. video-download-api.com is cheapest per request on paper, but it charges jobs on acceptance, so failed downloads are paid for. Among managed APIs priced by bandwidth, Vid Kraken charges $0.15 to $0.25 per GB with failures free, Oxylabs $1 to $2 per GB, and Apify downloader Actors up to $6 per GB on Apify's free tier.
Which YouTube download API returns machine-readable error codes?+
Vid Kraken returns one of 16 stable error codes, such as AGE_RESTRICTED, GEO_RESTRICTED and VIDEO_NOT_FOUND. Oxylabs returns numeric media codes, though some failures come back as a finished job with no file. Cobalt documents error codes. video-download-api.com and yt-dlp return free-text messages.
