Vid Kraken vs Apify for YouTube Downloads (2026)

Vid Kraken vs Apify YouTube downloader Actors: how they compare on workflow, proxies, retries, output, error codes, and pricing for production YouTube downloads.

Vid Kraken · Updated October 5, 2026

Apify is a marketplace of hosted scrapers called Actors, and its Store lists dozens of YouTube downloader Actors from independent developers. Vid Kraken is a single YouTube download API: you send a URL and get back a direct CDN link to the finished file. Both save you from running yt-dlp yourself. They differ in who maintains the downloader, how you get the file, and how you pay.

Workflow: Actor runs vs a download API

On Apify you pick an Actor, pass it input such as a list of YouTube URLs and a quality, and start a run. When the run finishes, its results land in a dataset you fetch through the Apify API, and some Actors also store the media file in Apify's Key-Value Store. That model is flexible, because the same platform runs scrapers for thousands of sites, but every YouTube Actor has its own input schema, output fields and quirks.

Vid Kraken has one request shape. You POST /download with a url and a format (1080, 720, 480, 360 or audio) and get a jobId back right away. You then poll the job or pass a webhookUrl and Vid Kraken POSTs the result to you when it's done, retrying failed webhook deliveries for about 4 hours. Long videos don't hit a synchronous timeout, and you can trim with startTime and endTime.

Proxy rotation and bot detection

YouTube blocks datacenter IPs and asks suspicious clients to "sign in to confirm you're not a bot". On Apify, how an Actor deals with that is up to its developer. Many route through Apify Proxy and let you choose datacenter or residential IPs, and residential bandwidth is billed separately at about $7/GB on paid plans. Others ask for YouTube cookies, or bundle their own proxies.

Vid Kraken runs its own proxy pools and download routes, so there are no proxy groups to pick and no cookies to export. If YouTube changes something, Vid Kraken fixes it on its side and your integration stays the same.

Retries and reliability

Apify Actors usually expose a retry count you configure per run or per video. If an Actor stops working because YouTube changed, you wait for its developer to fix it or switch to another Actor, and several popular YouTube Actors on the Store are now marked deprecated.

Vid Kraken retries across multiple download routes internally, so a job either completes or ends with a final error code. Its success rate is published on the live reliability page.

Output and metadata

Apify Actors return dataset items whose fields vary by Actor. Common ones are title, duration, available formats and a download link, which may point to Apify storage or straight to YouTube's own media URLs. Those YouTube URLs are signed for the IP that requested them, so they often fail when you download from a different server.

A finished Vid Kraken job returns downloadUrl, a CDN link that works from any server, along with title, duration, fileSize, the delivered format and the audio language. If you only need metadata, the /info endpoint returns title and duration without downloading anything, and metadata lookups are free.

Machine-readable error codes

With Apify, failure reporting is whatever the Actor's developer chose, often an error string in the dataset item or the run log. With Vid Kraken every failed job carries a stable errorCode: AGE_RESTRICTED, MEMBERS_ONLY, PRIVATE_VIDEO, GEO_RESTRICTED, VIDEO_NOT_FOUND, DRM_PROTECTED, LIVE_STREAM_IN_PROGRESS and others. Apart from NETWORK_ERROR, every code is final, so your code knows whether to retry or tell the user. Invalid input such as a malformed URL is rejected up front with HTTP 400. See the API docs for the full list.

Pricing

Apify pricing is set per Actor. Some charge per result or per event, some charge a monthly rental, and most also consume platform usage and proxy traffic from your Apify plan. That makes the real cost per video hard to predict until you run it.

Vid Kraken charges for bandwidth only. Each download counts its actual file size, with a 20 MB minimum, and there are no per-download fees. Plans start at $99/mo for 400 GB (Starter), and custom plans go as low as $0.12/GB.

Vid Kraken is on Apify too

If your pipeline already runs on Apify, the Vid Kraken Actor runs the same download API from inside the Apify Store. It costs about $2/GB there, and the direct API is about 90% cheaper with the same request and response shapes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vid Kraken an alternative to Apify for YouTube downloads?+

Yes. Apify is a general scraping platform where independent developers publish YouTube downloader Actors. Vid Kraken is a dedicated YouTube download API that returns a direct CDN link to the finished file, with built-in proxy rotation, retries and machine-readable error codes.

Is Vid Kraken cheaper than Apify?+

For downloads at volume, usually. Vid Kraken charges only for bandwidth, from $99/mo for 400 GB and as low as $0.12/GB on custom plans. Apify Actors charge per result, per event or by rental, plus platform usage and residential proxy traffic at about $7/GB.

Can I use Vid Kraken from Apify?+

Yes. Vid Kraken publishes the YouTube Video & Audio Downloader - Reliable Actor on the Apify Store. It uses the same request and response shapes as the direct API, so moving to the cheaper direct API later only changes authentication.

Why do Apify YouTube download links fail on my server?+

Many Actors return YouTube's own media URLs, which are tied to the IP that requested them and expire. Downloading them from a different server often returns 403 Forbidden. Vid Kraken returns a CDN link that works from any server.
