Bright Data sells three things you might use for YouTube: a YouTube Scraper API that returns data about videos, a video data product for AI training sets, and residential proxies for running your own downloader. They're good at data. Where teams get stuck is the step after it, turning a YouTube link into a video or MP3 file their app can use.

**Short version:** if you need metadata, comments or transcripts for millions of videos, Bright Data is a strong choice. If you need the files themselves, a download API is the better fit. Vid Kraken takes a YouTube URL and returns a direct CDN link to an MP4 or MP3, self-serve, at $0.15–0.25 per GB, with failed downloads free. Bright Data's scraper gives you a raw YouTube stream URL instead of a file, and its video file product is sold only through sales, after a KYC check.

## What Bright Data offers for YouTube

### The YouTube Scraper API: data about videos

You send YouTube URLs to `POST /datasets/v3/scrape` and get back structured records: title, views, likes, description, duration, thumbnail, channel details, tags, an age-restriction flag and, optionally, a transcript. There are separate datasets for channels and comments, and a discovery mode that finds videos by keyword or hashtag. From [Bright Data's documentation](https://docs.brightdata.com/products/scrapers/youtube/introduction), as of November 2026:

```bash
curl "https://api.brightdata.com/datasets/v3/scrape?dataset_id=gd_lk56epmy2i5g7lzu0k" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $BRIGHTDATA_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '[{"url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ"}]'
```

- **Sync or async.** A sync request returns the record if it's ready within a minute, otherwise a `snapshot_id` to fetch later. Large batches go through `/trigger`, with delivery to a webhook, S3, GCS, Azure or Snowflake.
- **Pricing per record.** $1.50 per 1,000 records pay as you go, or $499 a month for 384,000 records. 5,000 records a month are free. You're only charged for successful records.

The record includes a `video_url` field, which Bright Data describes as a direct streaming URL taken from YouTube's adaptive formats. That's a link to YouTube's own servers, not a file you own:

- **It expires,** usually within hours, so you can't store it or hand it to users later.
- **It's usually tied to the IP that requested it.** Fetched from your server, it often returns [403 Forbidden](https://vidkraken.com/blog/yt-dlp-403-forbidden).
- **Adaptive formats carry video and audio separately** at higher qualities, so you'd still download two streams and merge them with ffmpeg.

### Video data for AI training

For actual video files, Bright Data has a separate [video data product](https://brightdata.com/ai/video-data): MP4 clips cut to the timeframes you specify, separate M4A audio, captions and metadata, delivered to your S3, GCS, Azure or SFTP. It's built for multimodal training datasets, and it isn't self-serve. Bright Data's page says video extraction "is not publicly available" and requires KYC approval, a consultation and a custom quote.

### Residential proxies

Many teams use Bright Data only for its proxies and run yt-dlp through them. That works, and our [yt-dlp proxy guide](https://vidkraken.com/blog/yt-dlp-proxy) covers the setup. You still own the downloader, its updates, retries, storage, and every GB of proxy traffic, failed attempts included.

## Vid Kraken: the file, not a link to YouTube

One request with a YouTube URL and a format. The response gives you a link to the finished file on our CDN, which works from any server or browser.

```bash
curl -X POST https://vidkraken.com/api/v2/download \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $VIDKRAKEN_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"url": "https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ", "format": "1080"}'
```

- **Formats:** `1080`, `720`, `480` and `360` as a single merged MP4, `audio-mp3` at 320 kbps, and `audio` for the original stream. 4K on request.
- **Clips:** `startTime` and `endTime` in seconds.
- **Async when you want it:** poll `GET /download/{jobId}` or pass a `webhookUrl`.
- **Typed errors:** a fixed list of [error codes](https://vidkraken.com/blog/youtube-download-api-error-codes) such as `AGE_RESTRICTED` and `GEO_RESTRICTED`.
- **Reliability:** 99.99% of downloads complete, with the numbers [published live](https://vidkraken.com/reliability).

Bot detection, proxies and YouTube's changes are handled on our side. You pay for bandwidth only, at the delivered file size with a 20 MB minimum. Failed downloads, polling, webhooks and [metadata lookups](https://vidkraken.com/blog/youtube-metadata-api) are free.

## What 1,000 videos cost

Take 1,000 ten-minute videos at 1080p, roughly **100 GB** of files. Prices as listed in November 2026:

| Option | What it costs | What you end up with |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Bright Data Scraper API | **$1.50** for 1,000 records, or free within the 5,000 a month | Metadata and 1,000 stream URLs. Downloading the 100 GB, merging and storing it is still your job, often through a proxy |
| Bright Data video data | Custom quote | MP4 clips in your storage, after KYC |
| **Vid Kraken Starter**  | **$99** for 400 GB                                            | 1,000 MP4s on a CDN, with 300 GB left over                                                                              |

The scraper looks cheaper because it stops before the expensive part. The bandwidth, and the IP YouTube will actually serve it to, is the cost of a download.

## When Bright Data is the better choice

- **You need data, not files.** Views, likes, comments, channel stats and transcripts for large numbers of videos. Vid Kraken's metadata endpoint returns the title, duration, region restrictions and audio languages, nothing like Bright Data's record.
- **You're building a training dataset** of millions of clips and want it under a contract with compliance review.
- **You already buy Bright Data** for other sites, and one vendor matters more than the per-GB price.

Plenty of teams use both: Bright Data for the data, Vid Kraken for the files.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best Bright Data alternative for YouTube downloads?**

If you need the video or audio files, a dedicated download API like Vid Kraken: send a YouTube URL, get a direct CDN link to an MP4 or MP3, self-serve, from $0.15 to $0.25 per GB, with failed downloads free. Bright Data remains a strong choice for YouTube metadata, comments and transcripts at scale.

**Can Bright Data download YouTube videos?**

Not as a self-serve file download. The YouTube Scraper API returns metadata plus a video\_url that points at YouTube's own servers, which expires and is usually tied to the requesting IP. Bright Data's video data product delivers MP4 clips to your cloud storage, but it's sold through sales and requires KYC approval.

**How much does the Bright Data YouTube Scraper cost?**

As of November 2026, $1.50 per 1,000 records pay as you go, or $499 a month for 384,000 records, with 5,000 free records a month. You pay only for successful records. That buys data about videos, not the video files.

**Why does the video\_url from a YouTube scraper return 403?**

Scrapers like Bright Data's return YouTube's own streaming URL. YouTube usually ties that URL to the IP that requested it and expires it after a few hours, so fetching it from your server or later on often returns 403 Forbidden. A download API returns a link to a finished file instead.

**Is Bright Data or Oxylabs better for YouTube downloads?**

Oxylabs has a self-serve YouTube Downloader that writes MP4 or M4A files to your own cloud bucket at $1.60–2.00 per GB. Bright Data's self-serve YouTube product returns data, and its video files are sales-led. If you just want a link to the file, Vid Kraken is simpler and costs $0.15–0.25 per GB.
